Job Overview

The Payroll Manager oversees accurate processing and recording of the Company’s payroll activities and is responsible for projects relating to Payroll or HRIS process improvements. You will direct the day-to-day payroll-related activities of the organization. In addition, you will be responsible for the company's payroll practices and policies, as well as ensuring internal controls are adequate and operating effectively. Additionally, you will identify areas for process improvement and implement new processes or tools to enhance functionality and efficiency.


  • Support the transition of payroll management from external PEO to internal, including transition of process from the People team to Accounting
  • Collaborate with stakeholders throughout the organization and lead payroll-specific implementation of Workday HCM and Payroll solution
  • Design, implement, and manage payroll workflows to ensure all transactions are processed accurately and timely, including:
    • Reconcile payroll prior to transmission and validate confirmed reports
    • Ensure proper taxation of employer paid benefits
    • Administer employee reimbursement programs via payroll
    • Execute electronic time and attendance processing and interface with payroll
    • Perform monthly GL close duties related to payroll including journal entries and general ledger reconciliations
    • Update and reconcile monthly bank statements
  • Design and implement processes for, and ensure compliance with:
    • Payroll tax regulations
    • Quarterly and year-end regulatory filings
    • Forms W-2 and W-3 reporting
    • Requirements for unclaimed property payroll checks
    • Garnishment calculations and processing
    • Regulatory audits, when necessary
    • Jurisdiction registrations (new and renewal)
  • Develop ad hoc financial and operational reporting as needed
  • Collaborate with People team to ensure proper processing of employee records
  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries and resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Identify areas for process improvement and work cross-functionally to address inefficiencies and manual processes
  • Collaborate and coordinate effectively across all teams within the organization to provide support, analysis, and recommendations on payroll-related matters
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; develop alternative solutions; work well in group problem solving situations
  • Evaluate resource needs and build payroll team to support the Company during significant growth


  • 8+ years of experience processing multi-state payroll, CPP preferred but not required
  • Experience recording payroll journal entries and reconciliation of payroll general ledger accounts
  • Working knowledge of payroll best practices
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations
  • Basic treasury knowledge including bank transfers
  • Strong PC skills including proficiency in Excel
  • Working knowledge of electronic time keeping systems
  • Strong work ethic and team player
  • High degree of professionalism
  • Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material
  • Strong interpersonal (verbal and written) communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with various levels of management
  • Decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Familiarity with Workday and NetSuite a plus
